mine is a nomadic
practice, driven in part by the perpetual search for autonomous space
within an increasingly dictated reality. nomadism can be a strategy for
flexibility within a hostlie environment; it is also a way of
encompassing a rich variety of people and places within the scope of
your life-space. journeying is itself a space of being - for myself a
fringe-space, on the edge of motorways, on the edges of countries, of
people's lives.
since i created the untitled bookwork 'north, south, east', these
journeys have not translated directly into another form of
artistic presentation. the joureys, however, and the geographical,
ecological and cultural encounters they engender, continue to inform my
work and research on many levels. the attempt to communicate
meaningfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and to do so
within the space afforded by serially brief encounters, is a challenge
which reveals much about the nature of language and perception, and
demands a flexible and playful use of perspective. it can also be a
fantastic way of honing ideas; in the face of diverse critique only that
of which you are sure (and one can be sure also of an uncertainty) remains consistent.
